We can as experiencers of VRs possess free will as we interact with the 'physical' frame work of the VR and the other experiencers of the VR. Each VR is in a sense a meta reality 'outside' of the base reality of digital consciousness space. The VR content is generated based upon probability by [[TBC]] which feeds appropriate data to us individually representing and creating our VR experience. We interact with that probability based 'physical' reality and interact with other IUOCs sharing our VR experience. Within that experience effectively outside of the base reality, we can speculate on the nature of the base reality and create models of what might be its nature. Such a model is at the core of MBT.

Free will is the ability of an IUOC to make choices within their decision space by using their Intent. Free will is an essential characteristic of evolving consciousness systems whose goal is to lower entropy.[MBT Forum 1] Without consciousness, there can be no free will since nothing exists to make a choice. Without free will, consciousness would only be a deterministic script or purposeless process and therefore could not evolve by making profitable choices. Since consciousness and evolution are the two fundamental assumptions of MBT, the existence of free will becomes a logical necessity.[MBT Forum 2]

Note that having free will does not imply that an IUOC can do whatever it wants, it can only choose from the available choices within its decision space. It has both internal limitations (such as ego, fear, lack of awareness) and external limitations (such as the rule-set in PMR) that bound what choices are available. It should also be noted that a choice is made at the being-level of conscious intent; free will choice is generally not an intellectual decision. [MBT Forum 3][MBT Forum 4]

Determinism

Determinism is an incompatible concept and a practical impossibility. From any reference frame within the LCS, unknowns and randomness (even pseudo-randomness) create the inherent unpredictability of free will. Omniscience, like infinity, are interesting conceptualizations but lead to an impractical reality. [MBT Forum 2] Determinism can be approximated with very accurate data and reasonably predictable choice makers. [MBT Forum 1] This is similar to chaos theory, where the deterministic nature of a system does not necessarily make it predictable.

Virtual Realities versus Consciousness Space

MBT does not precisely state how free will is created within the reality cells of AUM. As an IUOC, we cannot reach the level of reality cells, code, and data to observe it or manipulate it in any way. That is the level where we exist as digital consciousnesses, not the level at which we operate as experiencers of VR. In order for us to see how free will was constructed, we would have to get "outside" of consciousness and observe it - instead of experience it.[MBT Forum 5]

We can as experiencers of VRs possess free will as we interact with the 'physical' frame work of the VR and the other experiencers of the VR. Each VR is in a sense a meta reality 'outside' of the base reality of digital consciousness space. The VR content is generated based upon probability by TBC which feeds appropriate data to us individually representing and creating our VR experience. We interact with that probability based 'physical' reality and interact with other IUOCs sharing our VR experience. Within that experience effectively outside of the base reality, we can speculate on the nature of the base reality and create models of what might be its nature. Such a model is at the core of MBT.

Free will as we experience VRs as IUOCs results because the two main categories of data with which we interact, other IUOCs and the VR substrate or physical seeming aspects, are totally independent of ourselves. We receive data representing these inputs and we process it internally and then we produce a resulting output data stream representing our choices or interactions with what is external to ourselves. It is within this internal processing that free will arises. We may interpret the incoming data according to our own understanding or functionality and freely choose what we consider to be an appropriate output response. There lies our free will within a VR experience.[MBT Trilogy 1]

Probable Reality Surface

The probable reality surface [MBT Trilogy 2] and free will are highly correlated — the probable reality surface is a result of free will, it is a forward looking probabilistic representation of an individuated consciousness with free will expressing its quality within the framework of an interactive virtual reality.
