A Mystic is a practitioner of Mysticism. Mysticism has been variously defined as first, the experience of mystical union or direct communion with ultimate reality reported by mystics. That this not be taken as simply a circular reference, note that there is a distinctive body of experience and information reported by mystics for millenia. Continuing to define this concept, mystics hold the belief that direct knowledge of God, spiritual truth, or ultimate reality can be attained through subjective experience (as intuition or insight) and within profound states of meditation. Mysticism exists as threads of though within all of the major religions of the past and present. It also includes the even more ancient practices in essentially all aboriginal societies of shamanism.
